November 10, 2006 - The Greek Community proved they can do more than party by participating in Alcohol Awareness Week.
Two major events were planned for the week. The first was the alcohol awareness assembly, “Getting the Facts: Alcohol in College Life.” Departing from the usual assembly, which typically includes a guest speaker or dramatic drunk driving presentation, the Greek Community took it upon themselves to create their own assembly.
Panhellenic President, Robin Powell, organized the assembly. Each organization was assigned a topic, ranging from underage consumption to the affects of alcohol on the body.
The format of each presentation varied. Some memorable presentations included Alpha Delta Pi’s video on Underage Consumption, in cooperation with the Buckhannon Police Department and Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, Alpha Xi Delta’s well-researched presentation on Sexual Consequences of Alcohol Consumption, and Theta Chi’s humorous approach on Binge Drinking.
On Thursday, November 9, the Panhellenic Council, with assistance from the Buckhannon Police Department, hosted the Drunk Driving Obstacle Course. Participants had the opportunity to wear a pair of “drunk” goggles and try to successfully maneuver their way through an obstacle course.
Many of those in attendance had a wonderful time.
“Thanks to everyone’s support through out the week. Alcohol Awareness week was a great success for yet another year. I appreciate the time, effort, and cooperation I received from the Greek Community, Cab and Buckhannon Police,” said Powell.
The Greek Community has participated in Alcohol Awareness week for the last eight years.
